Fashion Week FALL 2008 begins!
And oh how I am sorry I missed the first day, the day that everyone is excited, motivated, and inspired (because they have slept as opposed to every other night of fashion week) to put on their best duds and walk up the steps of Bryant Park like they get their picture taken on a daily basis (which I’m sure Andre and Anna do, but most of us kinda feel special when we get stopped because they admire our ensemble).
But you know I was picking up my Mason man today, so the tents would have to wait for me to grace the second/third/fourth/fifth?? row in my Missoni.
But I thought I would share with you one of my favorite fashion personas who you might think just puts it all together for this one special week, but I run into him all over NYC, and he has the outfit down to a T everyday. Now, I’m not going to say he always makes the best choices, but he’s so original, so unique, so himself, that you can’t not admire him.
His name: Patrick McDonald.
I’ve had the pleasure of chatting with him several times, and he’s always delightful. If you should every be graced with his presence, try not to focus on the plaid in your face, but the accessories that really make the outfit Patrick (any umbrella man can wear plaid).
A reader wrote to me today asking what to wear to a show, and I honestly thought of Patrick instantly because he just dresses like himself. Which is what most people do…show up from work, catch a show, and leave.
BUT! There are people who dress for the shows, and I am one of those people (8 out of 10 times). It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure out that style makes a statement at fashion week! And everyone knows Patrick because he makes a consistent statement.
Anyway, the answer to the question “What do you wear to Fashion Week” is, for those of us who aren’t Anna Wintour or Anne Hathaway, is take your style and push it a little bit father, be a little more adventurous. Be more trendy than usual. And above all, even if you show up in a burlap sack, be confident, that’s what makes your outfit at Bryant Park. I keep sayin it, and it’s still true. And THAT is why we love Patrick McDonald!
