A TREND FOR MEN – “A Gray Matter” by Adrien Field
(Men’s Style Post Every Tuesday) ::
After watching Breakfast at Tiffany’s and watching Holly Golightly flit around in her iconic little black dress, I got to thinking: what is the male equivalent of the chic women’s staple? The answer is the little gray suit. It might not sound as fabulous, but it serves a very similar purpose.
The gray suit is an essential in every man’s wardrobe. Hovering comfortably between the more formal, edgier black suit and the casualness of its navy cousin, the gray suit is the go-to item for nearly any occasion. It’s classic enough to wear for a job interview (if there are any new jobs to be had these days)—or even to the office on a daily basis (if you still have a job) but also can be dressed down for a dinner or cocktail party.
The perfect grey suit incorporates timeless tailoring like a slim silhouette with more modern elements like peak lapels and flat-front trousers. For those who like to dabble in more avant-garde fashion statements, ask your tailor to hem and cuff your pants just above the ankle for a Thom Browne/school boy look. You might attract a few stares in a traditional office environment but then again, the little black dress was never really meant to blend in, was it?
