No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.
Aesop, The Lion and The Mouse
Do you ever catch yourself not being satisfied with a smile and a thank you? Like when you give a friend a gift or a card on their birthday year after year, yet they never return the gesture. I’ll admit, I do. But I quickly stop myself. Because just as your behavior is consistent, so is theirs. You know that about them. And you continue to go out of your way because you know the smallest thing will brighten their day.
The old adage “it’s the thought that counts” then applies to you and not the beneficiary friend. Your gesture makes you a kind, considerate friend who cares about the happiness of others. There lies the satisfaction.
P.S. This is one of the most important sentiments I learned from my Mom.
