Pump Up Your Pilates – SPX

Last month I tried out Sebastian Lagree’s signature SPX workout at the soft opening of his new studio in Houston, Sculpt.

When I heard about this “power-packed” and “aggressive” pilates, I was instantly intrigued. Despite the fact classes were free because they were training instructors, I was a little hesitant to sign up.

You see, I have a super sensitive lower back.  It hinders me from doing things I would otherwise be physically capable of.  One of them being pilates – reformer, mat, or any other iteration.  One wrong move, and I’m in pain for days.

But, I decided to give it a go anyway. (I knew I could control the springs.)

The one-hour training focused on each muscle group with at least two different exercises using the glider, straps, an external bar, and hand weights. My peers seemed to be exerting a lot of energy and sweating profusely to complete each set with the suggested spring combinations.

I, on the other hand, felt the resistance was not challenging enough.  But due to my back pain, when I increased the intensity, it strained my back, and I had to revert to the lighter resistance.

Don’t get me wrong, the instructors offered adaptions to the workout for my back, but then the movement was really too easy without adequate resistance.

After discussing the experience with other classmates, here is my conclusion.

SPX is useful to:

  • Get back in to a workout routine – The strengthening exercises will prove to be cardio as well.
  • Challenge your muscles in a new way – You’ll find the movements difficult because they are different and will therefore increase your strength.

SPX is a workout for people who genuinely enjoy pilates and are able to put pressure on the lower back.

If you are looking to get fit quick, integrate SPX into your routine twice a week.  For those of you looking to really pump up your workout, I would go twice a month and really push yourself with the springs.
