My Tropical Traveling Workout

Exercise is usually the last thing on your mind when you go to the beach, or anywhere on vacation for that matter.  But if you’re like me and actually enjoy working up a sweat, having an empty schedule allows you to get in the time you always want to dedicate to your body.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you need to go all out, but exercise will actually help you relax more.

So here are a few ways I stay active while on vacay.

A GOOD OLD FASHIONED JOG

The obvious choice: running on the beach.

Running in sand is really challenging and will burn off calories quickly.

They’re everywhere so take advantage.  After a beach run I’ll throw in 3-10 sets, half single step, the other half double.

DVD GUIDES

On this trip I’ve brought along P90x and a resistance band so I don’t have to construct my own workouts.

The main guy is pretty cheesy, but he definitely pushes me harder than I would myself. And with your laptop, you can set up anywhere (don’t ask me why I chose the dining room).

YOUR OWN YOGA FLOW

Yoga is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and rejuvenate your body physically and mentally.  Find a shady spot to flow through your vinyasa or bring a DVD (the P90x one is not bad at all).

 

Quick tip: when using a towel as a mat, fold it in half so your feet can lock into the ground instead of slipping on the towel.

EQUIPMENT IS EVERYWHERE

If you look around your property carefully, you’ll find little spots that can enhance your workout.

I use the infinity pools for dips and the wooden lounge chairs for step ups.

MULTI-PURPOSE POOL

Obviously you can swim laps, but as I’ve shown above, you can be in your bikini and tone up.  Tricep dips are one way.  While sitting on the edge of the pool, you can do leg extensions using the water for resistance.  Try doing 100 and you’ll be surprised to see your quads get tighter without working up a sweat or putting down your margartia.

REST AND RECOVER

Rest is very important for your body in building strength over a long period of time.  And that essentially is one of our goals, right?

So, don’t kill yourself on vacation.  Let your body recover from the beatings you usually inflict during the week.  In fact if exercise isn’t your thing, don’t worry about it at all.  But if you want to be outside and get your heart rate up because that is what makes you happy, I hope you’ll find these tricks helpful on your next tropical getaway.
