This Ain’t Your Grandma’s Holiday Mix

December 12th, 2010 No Comments

— By Lindsey, Indie Rocker

Mary Note: I cannot stand holiday music. Seriously, it kills me. Love the holidays, just not the jingles. So this mix is instantly being added to my iPod.

Holiday music is typically soooo cliché and overplayed. But, I won’t lie I love it. My car radio is permanently glued to the All Christmas, All the Time station from Thanksgiving to New Year’s.

But when I’m at home, I like my playlist to sound a little more interesting – a mix of quirky indie tunes mixed in with a bunch of old soul classics. I also like my holiday music to be sort of holiday-nonspecific. That is, it’s wintery-sounding or “yay, holiday!” themed, but not overtly religious or exclusionary. I recognize that a lot of people don’t view the holiday season in a religious context, and because it’s my belief that the holidays (and, really, religion in general… but that’s a different discussion) should be inclusive, I’ve built this playlist to reflect that. So, without further ado, here’s what my holiday sounds like.

And here are a few more that weren’t available on the playlist website. I love each of these songs so much that it was too painful not to include them all!

Rent – Christmas Bells
Mumford & Sons – Thistle & Weeds
Neon Trees – Wish List
Stephen Colbert – Another Christmas Song
Joshua Radin – Winter

As an added bonus, you can download the excellent holiday mix from Target for free by going here! Obviously there’s a lot of amazing indie and woefully-underplayed holiday music out there. Be sure to shout out any glaring omissions you’ve noticed from my playlist in the comments!
