Break the rules shopping for maxi dresses

June 7th, 2011 2 Comments

Reader Tiffany asked last week if I could recommend some stores to find good maxi dresses.  Stores, not really, but I will encourage all of you to broaden your search in terms of brand and size.

In my opinion, good maxis are far from what a fashionista would consider perfect.

All of my favorites have been:

  • Discounted (Bought at Marshall’s, sample sale, etc)
  • 3 sizes to big, at least

The dress above I bought from my Mom’s resale store last year.  It’s a size 10!

This was my church outfit last week.  Extraordinary? No.  Comfortable and timeless? Absolutely.

The “best” maxi dress for me has proven to be this one I bought from Forever 21 over 3 years ago.  I know my church outfit isn’t extraordinary, but comfortable and classic it absolutey is.  Grey jersey is durable, forgiving, and goes with any color including (and especially) white. You can wear solo to run errands or accessorized for a weekday night out for beers.

A final example you might recognize from my spring cleaning sale a couple weeks ago.

This DVF is a size 12, but you can see it looks great.

And, I had a great time it in.  Haha.

  • Hi, Mary! Any online recommendations for places to find great maxis? (Especially for us short-ish girls 5’5″ and under.)

  • Unfortunately lisa I think you’ll probably have to hem the dress you love or wear big wedges.
