Give ‘em a rockin’ bod for Christmas

December 8th, 2014 No Comments

Amazing body in a bikini

Every year I do one looooong gift guide.  This year, you’ll get five different lists based on MTM daily themes.  Monday has been and will always be fitness.  And who better to be the model of hot bod than my SOULCYCLE rider and HOT 8 yoga enthusiast Amanda. Here’s what I love about her lifestyle: she exercises once a day, eats right, works hard, and doesn’t overindulge.  Hence her lovely backside :)

Now, there was a time when giving a gym membership was considered insulting. However, with the advent of our private studio addictions – whether it be SOULCYCLE, pilates, yoga, barre, etc – giving a pack of classes is the perfect gift.

Here are options for my favorite studios around that I know your peeps will love too.

For more studios in your area click here and THE BEST deal on a package hit up GROUPON or GUILTcity.

CLASSPASS GIFT

If you live in one of the cities below you can buy a CLASSPASS.  This allows them classes at any studio that is affiliated.  They can go to each studio 3 times a month!  The links below will take you to a map of the city with the studios pinpointed.

Now, if you’re looking for something more tangible, I suggest:

Undeniably the best “flip flop”

I wrote about new favorite shoe last March, and here I am over a year later still wearing THE SAME PAIR everyday.  In fact, I threw away all of my Havaianas because they’re no match for my Crocs.

Yes, you heard me, these sandals are made by Crocs.  Pushing your look of disgust aside, let’s be practical.  These lightweight rubber sandals are more comfortable!  Let me explain why:

  • The straps wrap around your ankles so your toes don’t’ have to hold on to the sole.
  • They’re so light and effortless they feel like you’re wearing nothing.
  • They neutral color and simple design is super cute and goes with every summer outfit you wear.

Winner!  My color combo (Espresso with gold studs) is not available online so you would have to call a store to get them (which you can).  Otherwise this charcoal pair with silver studs is cute.  They’re on sale for $25.

Because no one really has them, I give them as birthday and baby shower gifts.  They are ULTIMATE mommy shoe.

Walking in the Palisades the other day, a woman stopped my mom and I, both wearing our Crocs, and said, “Don’t you just love them?!”  We knew exactly what she was talking about :)

Is fitness an appreciated or offensive Christmas gift??

December 9th, 2013 1 Comment

BLAST900 interval training

Unfortunately, over the years this has become a loaded question.  If you buy a gym membership or gift card for someone, you believe you’re giving a thoughtful gift because you’re considering their well-being, financial situation, and what they like to do.  Unless the later is not true, in which case you’re perceived as saying they need to get in shape.  And even if they do, and have outwardly stated they WANT TO, you’re still the bad guy.

“Not so fast!” as Lee Corso would say.

Think about it as giving someone a massage or a day at the spa: you’re giving them something they usually wouldn’t splurge on for themselves.  ”Exercise” can be the same way.

To give fitness as a true GIFT, in other words as a luxury  and not as necessity, ask yourself these questions about your friend/family/signifigant other. We’ll call this person Alex to make things easier.

1.  What kind of physical activaty does Alex like to do?

If Alex doesn’t go to the gym, there are probably  more reasons other than time and money at play.  If Alex actually enjoyed it, s/he’d figure out a way to go.  So, what does Alex really like to do?  Tennis, yoga, group activities, basketball, surfing, skiing, racquetball, weight training?  Unfortunately I’m going to have to take golf out of this equation because it fails to get your heart rate up.

2.  Where can Alex do this?

Find a private studio, instructor, or group that specializes in the activity.  Tap into the luxury of the activity.  So you purchase hours with a trainer, not just a gym membership.  You get a package at a yoga, pilates, or spinning studio.  Find a tennis pro near Alex’s home or office.

Now the gift is truly a treat!

If Alex wants to be active but he hates the gym, your thoughtful gift of an activity s/he actually enjoys doing can serve as the gateway to getting Alex back in action!

Here are a list of studios I love in major cities:

Los Angeles

New York

Houston

Atlanta

Austin

Kind of a short list, but that’s where I rock out in town.

‘Tis the season of gift giving to those we love, work with, and barely know. I’m starting my holiday gift guide, follow along on Pinterest

November 19th, 2012 No Comments

The other day I saw Sol Republic, the company who makes the headphones I love, promoting a giveaway for people who start a holiday wish list board and pin a pair of their headphones.  This got me thinking that Pinterest would be a great place to store all of the things I’m considering for my MTM gift guide.  So, follow the board here, and then I’ll post the official list with links in two weeks.

I also searched through my previous gift guides to find many of the gifts are timeless.  I’ve put a link to the guides right there on the left hand menu so you can always access it easily.  Click and search for some great ideas!

DIY Mom’s gift instead of buying it, like the good old days

May 2nd, 2012 No Comments

20120502-083550.jpg

This is my mom and I last weekend at our friend’s outdoor wedding.  She’s actually taller than me, but I’m in heels and she, being a smart mother, wore flats.

If your mom is like mine, she can be hard to shop for. DIY projects can be fun to do, thoughtful, and impressive. Sounds like we’re on to something here :)

Here are a few suggestions I found really interesting for Mom gifts.

1. Tin can votive holders with a luminous design.

2. Glass magnets with letters and/or words.

3. Kodak collage mouse pad.

4. Exfoliating salt pouches.

5. Cake stand with character.

6. Dip-Dyed Stationary (maybe you get a stamp to personalize it more!)

7. Canvas tote bags with iron-on designs. Also see here.

8. Make your own vase for the flowers you buy.

Hope one of these is helpful for you!
