InstaChristmasGift

December 5th, 2012 No Comments

This is probably the most inventive, fun, and EASY gift idea I’ve come across in a long time!

StickyGram, a UK based company, is a service that allows you to create a sheet of nine square magnets using any of the photos you have taken on Instagram.  It takes about 4 minutes to make and costs $15 a sheet.  BRILLIANT.  And so much fun to make.

The only one little complaint I have is that you can’t use your friends’ photos to make them personalized sheets.  You can only use your own photos.

Use my code FRIENDFMRP and get $2 off your first order.

YOU MUST ORDER BY DECEMBER 9 TO GET YOUR STICKYGRAMS IN TIME FOR CHIRSTMAS.

I came across this idea on Pinterest, pinned it on my Holiday Gift Guide board and it was an instant favorite.  You can also find it on my MTM gift guide and GIVEAWAY for 2012.

Best place to be right now in Atlanta

April 6th, 2012 1 Comment

When it’s 70-80 degrees outside, you’ll always find me on a patio, no matter where I am in the world.

After spending the last week in Atlanta, I was surprised it’s not as easy as you would think to find a patio where you can get great food and wine.  Most of them back up to the street, which I’m not a fan of.  Who likes to hear cars racing by when you’re trying to chat and relax.

Here are the few I’ve found with a pleasant atmosphere, good crowd, and delicious food (that’s important!).  An * will denote restaurants voted one of the city’s best.

For the life of me I can’t think of these two places in Decatur I love….. My other favorite thing to do is a pack a picnic and head to Chastain or Piedmont Park.  Can’t go wrong with that.  AND I can bring Mason :)

(Photo: Yes, I’m posing.  At Ecco.  Love their bar too!)

Instagram is now available for your Android phone

April 4th, 2012 No Comments

Ok you crazy Android users, welcome to the world of photo fun that is Instagram!

I’m willing to bet that most of you who have iPhones already have the app, but just in case, I’ll explain it for everyone here.

Instagram is quick and easy photo editing and sharing app.  Here’s how it works:

  1. Snap a pic or choose one from your library.
  2. Size and crop the pic to fit the square.
  3. Play with the filters at the bottom of the screen until you find one you like.
  4. Add a border, contrast, and focus if you want.
  5. Write a clever comment and enable geo-tag to share the location so people can see where you are on a map (great for restaurant sharing).
  6. Distribute to Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Fouresquare, or all of them at one time.
  7. Scroll through cool photos from people you follow.

You’ve seen tons of photos I’ve used instagram to enhance. It’s kind of addictive actually. Plus, I love how I can shoot the pic to all of my platforms instantly.

Try it out, the app is free, and follow me – Mary Rambin of course.

So jealous of her just-threw-it-up ‘do.

I saw this girl sitting on the curb as we were waiting in line for Fiona Apple at SXSW in Austin (where boho chic thrives).

When I asked her how she did it, she looked at me and said politely with her eyes, “Is she serious,” and actually responded, “I just threw it up.”

Well, of course she did! Ugh, I can never pull this together, no matter how long I try.

The best part was when I asked if I could snap a few pics and the guys next to her started laughing. Then when they realized I was serious they were all impressed with her. She was graceful about the whole thing, which is why she is truly a natural beauty :)

Long story long. Love her hair. Great look for spring. If you make it happen, let us know how you did it please!

Scheduling exercise and exhaustion

April 2nd, 2012 No Comments

Yesterday I spent the morning in bed (watching Jersey Shore reruns and eating pancakes!) and then went to the Botanical Gardens in Piedmont Park in Atlanta (above) for a stroll in flip flops.

That’s right, I didn’t say anything about spinning, yoga, or a run through the park.  I took the day off from exercise.  I was tired as I should be after my week of exercise.

We all need a day off from work, diets, exercise, things that are taxing on our bodies and souls.

But here’s the thing, all of those are important and necessary. Our bodies need exercise to get our heart rates up at least for 30 minutes a day.  So how do we know when it’s time to rest and then recover?

The best answer: When you feel tired.  When your body aches.  When you physically feel spent.

How many days you take off will change from week to week. I’ve found my days off are a direct result of how hard I push myself on the others.  Of course, scheduling becomes a conflict as well.  I might even want to workout one day, but they day’s demands consume all of my time.

The second answer:  When we plan a day off.

Just like everything else, we should carve out time to exercise and rest.  Here’s my regular schedule:

  • Monday: Lifting with trainer.
  • Tuesday: Spinning/cardio.
  • Wednesday: Lifting with trainer.
  • Thursday: Day off.
  • Friday: Boxing/cardio.
  • Saturday: Yoga and maybe a jog.
  • Sunday: Spinning/jog/light weights.

This is what works for me.  Me, maybe not you.  By Thursday I’ve found I’m usually physically spent.  If not, then I do a light workout and take Sunday off.

Plan your week around your goals and schedule the time in your calendar to make it happen.

Are you into “pinning” your favorite things?

October 26th, 2011 No Comments

Over the last month I’ve gotten a ton of email alerts that people have started following me on Pintrest.  Most of these are friends and clients I know who I would never guess to be active on a new social network.  (“Facebook is enough for me.” You know them.)  In the past they’ve scoffed at blogging and took no interest in tumblr or instagram.  So I’m curious as to why they have signed up for Pintrest….

A quick breakdown for those of you who are unfamiliar with these social networks:

  • Tumblr – Blogging platform that allows you to post easily and follow all of your favorite blogs on one “dashboard” feed (like facebook) so you don’t have to go to each blog separately. Content is pictures and witty short text from real people, news sources, celebs, restaurants, and magazines.

  • Instagram – Photo app that enhances pictures with filters and posts to a feed.  You can “like” and comment on people you follow.

  • Pintrest – It’s like ripping out an article and putting it on a bulletin board to use later.  You pin a pic with link to the source on your different themed boards.  Follow other people’s boards that will feed to your main board.

I believe people like Pintrest because they don’t feel pressured to create original content or add their own photos.  Pintrest is purely a reblogging platform.  The truth is that you don’t HAVE TO POST anything to tumblr or instagram to follow people and read their content.

Personally I’m a fan of tumblr because I like the quality and variety of content mixed with life stories.  Instagram is a great place to play with pics, but I don’t check my feed often.  Both of these have become wildly popular.

Today I spent an hour updating my Pin Boards, but it’s just not my thing.  I distribute my content to a lot of networks facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, and tumblr so you can read it easily on the platform you prefer.

The links above are to my pages if you’d like to check out each and follow me there.

THAT little thing is a HD video camera??

July 27th, 2011 No Comments

Apparently so!

Joy just bought the Go Pro Hero (Naked for $260) to shoot video around her studio and during yoga classes.

It’s mildly waterproof, but once you put it in it’s little case it’s fully protected.  The case also allows you to strap it onto your head!

The weird part about it is that it doesn’t have a screen so you can’t see what you’re shooting.  You’re supposed to just point it in the general direction of the action.  Hmmm….

Looking forward to seeing her first attempts.

I’m still loving the Samsung SH 100 for $200.

(Full disclosure: Samsung provided my camera for free to work on their Coast to Coast campaign.)
