My no-escaping-it workout plan for winter

Even though my bf and I came into our new little house without any of our own furniture, we did have a few key items:  his spin bike and my crystal stemware.  What else do you need?!

The spin bike has been my saving grace to all of my excuses to NOT workout.  I know you all think I’m super motivated to workout every day.  Well, I wish that were true.  I come up with excuses just like everyone else.

For example:

  • I’m exhausted from my long day at work.
  • It’s too cold to go for a run.
  • The early onset of nighttime is deceptive.
  • My gym is too far away.

Sound familiar?  I’m sure it does.  But after setting up my own little ghetto Soul Cycle (yes, in the entry way that no one uses) and a goal of 500 calories in my heart rate zone 3, I can usually hop on with a decent attitude and get off feeling at least 75% better.  Not bad!

Do you have a winter workout plan?  I always need one to help me get through the cold months.  Especially with the holiday treats bombarding me from every direction.  I’ve found that if I can stay active, then I really don’t indulge much.

If you don’t have equipment in your house, I say go for the DVDs or website subscriptions:  P90x, Physique 57, iTrain, YogaGlo…and there is always the MTM Fitness archives where you’ll find plenty of “anywhere” exercises.

SOURCES OF MOTIVATION FOR YOUR WORKOUT

Whether you’re participating in Nutritionista’s Challenge or just need to spice up your workout routine, I offer you a list of suggestions you might find helpful in achieving your fitness goals:

Your personal trainer on your MP3 player! This website has thousands of videos and workouts (with music) you can download so you aren’t strolling around the gym wondering which machine to do next.  Workouts include strength training, cardio, spin, yoga, etc.

The latest release from SanDisk, this MP3 player tunes into the radio and plays “discs” with 1000 songs from Billboard’s top lists (one genre per disk).  No downloading – ever!  For $99, you get the player and a disc of your choice.  Additional disks (of 1000 songs) are $50. I don’t have to tell you that’s cheaper than iTunes.

Every Monday I post fitness tips, playlists, videos, or challenges so you can incorporate something new into your workout every week.  Click here to see posts from the past to create a whole new workout. Most of them, you don’t need to be in a gym to do.

  • Join the Gym

It’s cheaper than ever right now to sign up for a membership.  The sales people are looking for you to sign on the dotted line, so feel free to negotiate for no initiation fee or a few free sessions with a trainer.  Ask for a free week before you sign.  It’s important to try out all of the gyms in your neighborhood so you can weigh in on which is the best for your buck. My advice is to find one where you like the classes, so when you don’t feel like going, you know you’re in and out in 1 hour. (You know Equinox is my favorite, so should you go there, please say I referred you.  If you’re a Houstonian, check out fit or the new 24 hour fitness.)

  • Curves/Women’s Circuit Gyms

I know it sounds cheesy, but these mindless workouts can help get you back on track when you REALLY don’t want to workout. The gyms provide machines in a circle along with workouts and music so literally you just go through the motions for an hour.  You’ll find yourself pushing harder once the endorphins start flowing.  Sign up for one month and then seek out a place you enjoy.

I have several friends who love the PX90 system.  The set of discs offers a variety of workouts and a nutrition plan to keep you on track.  Perfect for those of you who can’t make it to the gym (for whatever reason), this system will get you in shape asap.  The videos are a little cheesy, but who really cares as long as the cheese is not on your backside :)
