My bikini diet isn’t so bad

May 21st, 2015 No Comments

I’ll be honest with you…I’ve been hiding under slouchy tanks and sweaters since I saw you last.  Thankfully my limbs are pretty lanky so no one can tell what has actually been going on underneath my clothes.  One guy I dated recently called my body soft and I almost started crying…not really, but I complained to my trainer for weeks about it.

In my heart I believe that the extra weight around my tummy has come on because:

  1. I don’t teach as much as I used to (I’m burning about 1000 less calories/wk)
  2. I eat out and drink more than should.  Hey, I’m still single over here.
  3. I’m getting older.  Technically, the body’s metabolism isn’t supposed to slow down until 35, but I’ve always been one to jump the gun.

Instead of FaceTuning all of my photos this summer, I’ve decided to take a little action and get the look and feeling I really want out of my body.

That being said, I hate to diet, so I’m just going to clean up my act.  From my experience, the smallest changes can be the hardest and always pay off the biggest.

Here’s my plan:

1. Eat cleaner.

None of this:

R+D Ding’s Crispy Chicken Sandwich

Some of this:

Seabass with Mushrooms at Baltaire

More of that:

Roast Deli Brentweod Tuna Salad and Veggies

And of course more cooking at home.  I also want to eat less bars.  As clean as they are these days, there is always more nutritional value and fiber to fill me up in real food.

 2. Exercise with a mission.

I’m strapping my heart rate monitor back on and committing to 600 calories per workout.  Three days in Zone 3, the fat burning zone, and 3 days (7 classes, 600 per class) in Zones 4 – 5. So total, I’m at about 6000 calories for the week.

3. More water during the day.

I don’t know why, but I absolutely hate drinking water.  Unfortunately, I think it’s finally affecting my digestion, if you know what I mean (TMI sorry!).  Arrowhead’s Black Cherry water has been a good way to ease into this new habit.  It’s really flavorful and filling.

4. No wine at night.

Come on, you know you’re with me when I say it’s sooo nice to unwind at the end of the day with a glass of wine. These days, I’ve been unwinding to the tune of 2-3 glasses a night! EEK.

Soooo, instead, I’m going to hit up Kreation daily and pick out ANY juice to drink at dinner.  Yes, they’re loaded with sugar, but they’re alcohol free :)

Last night I only drank half of one juice….and then ate half a cookie.  But I was happy, and I think that’s an important factor when you’re making changes.

Because this diet is not about abstinence, the rule is drinking only on the weekends.

5. In bed by 10:30pm.

More sleep makes your body more efficient and everything somehow becomes easier when your rested. Nothing is more powerful than natural energy.

And ta dahhhhhh!

Holiday weekend is the perfect time to start, right?! Who’s with me???

You can’t hide out in this camo.

If you’re wearing Valentino this spring, you’re going for stylish, not stealthy.  Both the camo and neon trends have been popular in years past.  Here they’re combined to make every outfit more funky and playful.

Ironically, Valentino’s collection for Spring is much more sophisticated.

I snapped these pics and snagged the pink bikini at Just One Eye, a private hidden boutique on Romaine (just east of La Brea).  They are my Valentino, Proenza, and The Row headquarters.  So many other A-Mazing collections in there….if you’re in LA, you must see it for yourself.  The website is very cool as well.  The prices are steep, but if nothing else, the style is inspiring.

Like a typical man, Mason chills while Mommy shops…and stares me down to “hurry up.”

A brand that fits the bill every time

Mary Rambin mason dress horse

Now that I’m out of Atlanta and have been living in NYC and LA, I’ve been out and about more. You know what that means: dress up time!  Don’t get me wrong, I’m still in spandex most days, but I’m also putting together more outfits for dinners with friends, and even a couple “ensembles” for events.

In doing so I look for clothes I can reinvent a million different ways.  Right now my hunts lead me to the same designer label: mason.  Mason – like my little man!  Because my dog’s name is mason I’ve always had my eye on this brand.  These days the pieces are making it off the rack and into my closet because they fit the bill in so many ways:

  • Unique designs/cuts
  • Simple and chic
  • Reminiscent of some of my favorite labels: Helmut Lang, Yigal Azrouel, Theory.
  • Affordable: $350+
  • Available at stores I frequent: Tootsies, Intermix, Barney’s, Neiman’s.

This turquoise silk dress is the perfect example.  I kept my accessories simple when I went to the horse races at Del Mar (above) and then went a little more funky for Leven’s Percy Jackson 2 Premiere below.

Mary Rambin in Mason Summer 2013

Here’s another Mason dress I’ve worn at least 5 times since I bought it in April.  I’m actually shocked the only picture I can find of me in this dress is one of me devouring a macaroon at Addison.

So I slipped it on quickly for you.

Mary Rambin Mason dress spring 2013

The dress is really a simple LBD, but the snake-embossed leather and dramatic neckline make it so much more interesting!

Before you get back to whatever you’re doing, I thought I’d leave you with a laugh.

Mary feeding horse carrots 2013

The horse in the picture, Basamati, and I had a little thing going in the barn.  I fell in love with his sweet face, he nussled me and kept beaconing me to his pen.

Mary Rambin with Basmati

Obviously we know what he wanted: more carrots :)  Unfortunately I ran out just as my friend Mendy said, “smile with him and I’ll snap some pics.”  You know me, I’m all for it.  As she’s snapping away, Basmati smells carrots on my hands and since he can’t see my they’re empty, he starts to nibble….

Mary Rambin surprised by horse

OMG, I think, and then:

Mary Rambin getting bit by a horse

CHOMP!  On my thumb!!!!  It all happened so fast. Mendy was snapping away so she caught the whole thing!! I thought my thumb was a goner, but somehow I pulled it away intact.  Whew.  And LOL.  All at the same time.  Every time I look at that picture I almost laugh to tears.  It’s like some stereotype from a Will Ferrel movie: blonde goes up to pet the pretty horses and loses a hand.  Haha.

Mom and I are curled up in the backseat of her mom’s car headed to her grandparents’ house. It’s a three and a half hour drive…should have known she’d get bored and start snapping pics.

But I love her anyway!!! iPhone and all. I’m thankful she can take me so many places.

Hope your holiday has started off well. Before you close your computer and sign off, I want to extend many thanks for your companionship on MTM. I really appreciate you stopping in to share your lives with me.

Safe travels and much love to your families!

You can’t be comfortable Mase. Perhaps you like to sprawl out on the other side of the couch that’s wide open….

I really don’t like you right now.

I’m a terrible mother! I can’t be on the room or even within earshot when they give him shots. I learned this lesson a few years ago when I took my cat in for a shot and fainted. So, I have to leave. Poor Mase….

You don’t make your kids go through this do you? Mom, wipe that smile off your face, get your phone, and let’s get out of here!

Happy Hour in Mexico

January 21st, 2010 No Comments

A lot of fedora and even more Facebook. She’s been posting about our morning workouts which she so lovingly calls Camp Mary. We start at 7am with a 2 or 3 mile run and then hit the gym. Today she finally felt the endorphin high and can’t wait for tomorrow’s challenge. I’m loving having a partner (aka someone who listens to my instruction and attacks each exercise with

enthusiasm.) It’s the least I can do for all of the career guidance and advice she gives me daily. I’m constantly in awe of her strength and accomplishments. Not to mention she’s too much fun!

Looking tres chic in Chanel…and quite buff for a man who has never seen the inside of a gym.

You make the bed, I un-make it. Think of it as an early turn-down service. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to chase cats in my dreams.
