“The last time man cleavage was so prevalent in the U.S. was in the 1970s — ‘the golden age of male chest hair,’ says Mr. Bryan. Epitomized by John Travolta in 1977’s ‘Saturday Night Fever,’ the convention back then was to skip enough shirt buttons to show off a thick forest of hair, perhaps topped with a gold medallion as a sign of virility…The latest resurrection of man cleavage does raise a not-so insignificant issue: to wax or not? For a number of years, any male chest hair was considered a fashion don’t, but very recently a thin thatch has become quite acceptable. The low-cut look ‘is better if you have a little chest hair,’ says Tyler Thoreson, a New York-based men’s style consultant. ‘It’s not about showing off chest hair, it’s about it peeking out a little bit.’”

I thought it never went away.

I live and die by the two button unbuttoned rule.

I don’t think the two button rule ever died, but with the resurrection of the deep V (by American Apparel), chest hair has come back into style.  I’m a fan!

But men, get girl approval first.  If you’re hiding a sweater under your shirt, we really don’t want to know about it.  Unless, you win our hearts, and then we’ll lovingly refer it it as “manly” in bed.

Gifts for the guys guy, the metro, and the boy at heart!

By Brandon Trentham

Well the time for stress, fake smiles, ugly sweaters, and fruitcakes is quickly coming upon us whether you like it or not. So I figured I would share what myself and most STRAIGHT or GAY men would love to have. Most men are simple and don’t love to return things, so if you get us something we really want, then your a keeper.

Regardless if he’s a friend, boyfriend, husband, or father, these items interest and excite us all.

1.     A nice double breasted wool over coat — with wide lapels, it’s is trendy and functional.  The one pictured is Prada, but you can get one at any price.

2.     The Logitech universal remote — now not only can it control the tv, dvd, and surround sound, but now the touch screen operates our PS3.

3.     Sunglasses that stand out, but aren’t offensive — The gold framed Limited Edition Dita Midnight specials.

4.     The Big Book of Breasts – A coffee table book ALL men love (maybe in different way)s can be for the frat guy’s home or the bosses gag gift.

5.     A bowtie – The perfect stocking stuffer that’s trendy yet manly and can be worn dressy or casual.

6.     A woven bracelet – An easy and elegant simple gift for someone you just can’t read is the woven bracelet.  I love this one from YSL.

7.     Tell him he’s “The One” – Voted #1 best smelling fragrance of the year is also named “The One” by Dolce and Gabbana.

8.     The English Riding Style boot – A winter boot that can be worn both inside or outside the pant. The pair above is from Ralph Lauren.

9.     Send him to the moon! – If your bank account is bottomless and you want your guy to be the coolest guy on the block, here is the out of this world gift. For $250,000 he can be one of the first people ever to fly to outer space and back on Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic.

What money can’t buy….

So although men are easy and somewhat predictable, we can also have a sensitive side  that isn’t shown on the surface. It’s not just the money you spend, the wrapping and bow on it, or how many are around the tree, but the thought that went into it. We, like women, love things that show you were thoughtful and put your heart into it. If you never cook maybe write “Cook for me baby” notes and wrap it in a box for him to use when he wants. If you’re a workaholic maybe plan a weekend getaway (especially if its camping or something you wouldn’t pick but he would). The point is to show him what he means to you whether in a box or a Mrs. Claus Frederick’s of Hollywood nighty.

Proper fit, Perfect Price – Proper Cloth

Proper fit, Perfect Price – Proper Cloth

Looking for Tom Ford tailoring without the Madison Avenue price tag?  Check out ProperCloth.com where you can custom design your own shirt for under $100.  Select your price range, fabric, style, enter your measurements, and you’re all set.  Truly make it your own without ever having to raise your arms, or even leave your desk.

I love this idea because I feel like some men don’t know how a shirt should fit.  Somehow you all think you wear a “Large” (or in this day and age a “Small”), but usually that’s not the case.  So a custom shirt is your best bet to finding something that fits properly.  And at Proper Cloth, it’s the same price as a shirt from Club Monaco or Banana Republic.

Cuff Him Please

I love cuffed jeans for men this summer.  Comfortable which you like, and trendy which I adore. It’s a win win for everyone!

You’ve seen Adrien roll up his jeans, but since I’m guessing not many of you relate to his style, I had to stop this hottie on the subway to show you straight men can pull it off too.

It’s time to ditch the playboy attitude and/or the surfer charade, throw out your tatooed board shorts, and get some manly trunks for the pool party.  And by manly, I mean bright patterned, flowerless shorts that fit.

I might be sending mixed messages here so let me just say this clearly:  beach bum is out, sophistication is in.  Express your natural intellect and knowledge of style by selecting a pattern for your bathing suit that says “I’m a man, purple is the color of royalty, and I rule this pool.”

Above are a few examples you can use as a guide.  Notice the stripes, plaid, and use of color.  Not a flower in sight.

I hope you see the humor and sincerity in this post :)  I only want the best for my boys.

Don’t worry boys, your drivers and boat shoes are still in from last summer, but if you’re looking to up your style game, this year you’ll be wearing Nu Bucks.

No, this is not the Southern Comfort going to my head.  And I won’t be telling you to wear pleated khakis to go with them (yikes).  Think of a nu buck as a more casual wingtip that goes with everything.

A reader wrote into the Advice Box asking about where she could find her man a good tux without spending all of her good money.

My response: Arnold Brant.

I visited the showroom earlier this year and was amazed by the impeccable quality of the suits.  Their collection ranges from casual jeans and blazers, to cashmere suits and coats, and a few classic tuxes. It’s a more affordable John Varvatos.

Although not available online, you can find Arnold Brant at Nordstrom and other retailers around the country.
