Kitten heels….really? Again? Didn’t they get it when no one started wearing them 2 years ago?

I’m still not getting on board.

Next trend please.  And let’s make it a good one.  Like round toes, platform stilettos, cut-out wedges, or big bows.  Yes, you heard me right, I’d choose a bow over a kitten heel.

Good morning color and commentary

February 27th, 2012 No Comments

Instead of a cup of coffee, I’m waking up this morning with a pop of color from Erdem’s Spring 2012 collection.  LOVE the pattern. Thanks to Neimans’ “new” tumblr?  I’m not sure if it’s new, but I discovered it this morning via their twitter.  It’s pleasant, nothing revolutionary.

Speaking of tumblr, I don’t go to my dashboard as much anymore.  From the countless articles, Pinterest seems to have stolen the social spotlight these days (despite David Karp, tumblr founder, on the cover of Fast Company this month).  I pin on my 7 boards every once in a while.  But, I’m committing to using it more, if only to find new recipes which seems to be the activity all the rage from the women I follow on Twitter.

Did anyone find the Oscars as uneventful I as did?  I’m even bored by the dresses.  I swear J Lo wears the same dress – absolutely the same hairdo – to every award show.  Thankfully Gweneth was there to save us with her refined and simple elegance.  Those mermaid cotton candy dresses even had my sugar tooth throbbing in pain.

I am happy for The Artist, such a brilliant piece of work.  Now we know that excellence will trump celebrity, even if he is George Clooney.

Ok, I’m about to make a little video to say hello again. Just let me get out of my pj’s and I’ll meet you back here in an hour or so.

Duke’s style-infused gift guide for guys

December 9th, 2011 1 Comment

20111208-135041.jpg

As I’ve written about several times, Duke Hagenburger (at Neiman Marcus in LA) is THE most stylish man I know personally.

I had him pull a few of his favorites right now that every man would love and appreciate for years. Quality classics worth the price point!

20111208-135252.jpg

Any Zachary Prell button down, $198. We love the slim fit, unique patterns, and collar variety for an off the rack dress shirt.

Neiman Marcus cashmere sweater with two-tone collar, on sale for $298. Great price!

Vince neutral, goes-with-everything cardigan. Blended yak and sheep’s wool. $275. Another steal for the quality.

20111208-135655.jpg

John Varvatos military inspired jacket. Olive leather with canvas accents. Needless to say manly. $1198.

Duke insisted on suggesting a splurge. For good reason. These two items are AWESOME.

Brunello cashmere sweater for $885. Comes in 8 colors.

Santiago Gonzales (son of handbag designer Nancy Gonzales) travel shaving bag….wait for it…$1295. As Ali says, “he would have that forever…he better!”

For more info, styling questions, or you just want to meet Duke to style your man, shoot him an email at dhagenburger@me.com.

Choose a side in the white collar dress shirt debate

June 21st, 2011 4 Comments

Growing up in the south I’ve seen my fair share of stripped shirts topped off with a white collar.  My aversion to the combo probably stems from the fact that southern men wear a size “large” or bigger.  So generally speaking, their shirts swallow them, even the ones with whiskey bellies. Pairing the blousy shirt with over-sized pleated slacks or jeans, the man has no chance at style.  I’m being pretty harsh right now, but I’ll tell you, it’s the truth.

Recently I’ve started developing a little crush on the white collar.  Obviously the Tom Ford shirt I saw at Neimans (above) is drop dead fabulous, but even the mass market brands are showing adorable options.

Aside from the fit, the only other criteria to pull it off is a jacket of some sort.  Whether it’s a suit jacket a or blazer, the look doesn’t seem complete without it, in my opinion.

What are your thoughts?  Love it?  Hate it?  Why?  Please do tell below!! I honestly can’t wait to hear your thoughts.  Kind of like cargo pants, this shirt draws a line in the sand and demands you choose a side.

The lipstick you LOVED!

April 19th, 2011 3 Comments

As much as you loved the artistic cat eye that Karla created, you went crazy for the lipstick!

After looking at the pictures again, I did too.  So I went back to Neimans and asked Karla what color she used.  Like any good artist, she mixed and matched a few to get the perfect shade.

  • YSL Rose Romantique #146
  • Chanel “Chance”
  • Chanel “Boy”

The main color was the first YSL.  So I tried that one on by itself and I’ll tell you, it’s BOLD.  Like, a nighttime party pink with a matte finish; not something you would wear everyday.  Although, it’s a statement that will make an outfit – like bright red or hot pink, just softer.

For more frequent use, I bought “Evasion” from their new Coco Shine collection and “Genie” Rouge Allure gloss.

Evasion (on the left) is much more neutral and sheer than what I wore that night, but it has a nice pink hue that I don’t have much of in my arsenal already.  (For some reason it looks more orange here than pink.) The coral Genie gloss is THE COLOR of the season and enhances your lips (without being too aggressive) against blue, yellow, white, and black clothes.

(BTW…those are my lashes!!!)

*Karla works at the Chanel counter at Neiman Marcus in Houston.  If you’re looking for the most talented artist in your city, here’s my suggestion.  Go up to the designer floor and ask a sales woman who she refers her clients to.  It’s they’re job to know who the best is so they won’t lead you astray.

Another Carla magical makeover

November 17th, 2010

Carla did it again!!

(Carla works at the Chanel counter at Neiman Marcus in Houston)

UPDATE: You had questions about this look, so I’ll give you answers.

ScarletEmily -  What is the eyeshadow?

Carla used mostly Chanel makeup, but my eyes were done with the “Modern Love” eye palette from Nars ($55- scroll all the way down to the bottom), which is a good combo of neutral colors you could wear daily. It’s like the Stila palette I love so much that they no longer sell.

MaryAnne – So pretty! Mary, could you do a post on bridal make up one day?

Absolutely.  I’ll tell you right now, the secret to bridal makeup is finding an artist who understands how to highlight your natural features and make your face camera ready.  That’s why I always suggest trying out several before committing to one simply because a friend refers you.

JaclynDay – Your teeth are the whitest of the white. I forget—do you get them bleached professionally?

I just had the Zoom treatment ($450 at Dentiq) a few weeks ago actually. Until then I hadn’t because even white strips made my teeth hurt.

I am really impressed with the procedure and results.  Even though my teeth are super sensitive, I could tolerate two 15 minute sessions. The pain was only mild later in the day.  I can definitely tell a difference!

After I posted about Zoom, a reader wrote to me and said when used repeatedly it can degrade the pulp in your teeth. She used a fake email address, so I’m not sure how credible this testimonial is, but it’s obviously worth mentioning.  Other people have complained their lips were burned.  Just like with most procedures there are risks and side-effects you should consider.  I wouldn’t do it unless I absolutely trusted the technician who was meticulous is protecting my lips and gums.

ShamelesslySheryl – Please, NO MORE scary wrinkley pre-Botox pics, Mary. Pretty pre-party pics like these are why I still scan your blog now…

Yikes, I know, they’re scary right?!  Trust me, I hate them as much as you do, but I think it’s important for people to see why I get the injections.  The procedure isn’t a “necessity” by any means, but it is something that makes me feel comfortable in my own skin and will prevent further wrinkles.
