Andrew’s McDreamy Valentine

February 7th, 2010 No Comments

Reader/Blogger/Dedicated Student Andrew was the winner of the Patrick Dempsey Avon cologne with this entry for his McDreamy date!

“My dream date is Lt. Dan Choi, formerly of the armed forces.  He stands up for what he believes in, is a proactive member of the LGBTQ community, and he wears a uniform.
Plus, I got the chance to march next to him at the National Equality March in DC this past October, so that puts me one step closer.”

Too cute!

LOOK IN THE MIRROR NOT A MAGAZINE – Winter Hats

October 27th, 2009 No Comments

Reader Stacy wrote me the other day asking what kind of hats she should be considering for winter.

My response:

You have to try on a bunch then you choose which looks best. Trends in hats don’t really matter if it looks bad on your head!

The knit beret has been a fashionista favorite for a while now because it looks good on almost everyone.  Start there and then work your way around the rack to find others that suit YOU.  You should have a collection of at least three if you live in a city with a chilly season.

plazatoo:

As the mercury drops and the winding pathways of Central Park become lined with crunchy auburn leaves the best accessory (aside from a pumpkin spice latte) is a classic knit cap to top your locks.

This rich plum beret from Hat Attack has a boho feel that’s perfect for throwing over bed head hair when braving the frigid streets for a bit of effortless style à la Carrie Bradshaw.  Pair it with a chunky knit scarf for a quintessential Fall look with just the right amount of je ne sais quoi French touch.

“Big mistake…Huge”

August 24th, 2009 No Comments

“You’re “new” car is just around the corner!  I think it’s AWESOME you told that guy you didn’t like his attitude.  I’m surprised he has the luxury to be such an @$%^*!  The older I get the more I hold customer service as equally important as the product!  I’m thinking Pretty Woman right now “you guys work on commission right? Big mistake…huge” — Reader

Haha.  I totally agree.

Which is why I will never consider a BMW again and will always LOVE Lexus.

Mercedes v. Audi

August 24th, 2009 No Comments

From a reader:

“Just watched your clip on the frustrating car search.  Sorry you’re having such a miserable time with this.

I’m writing this because my husband has a MB and I have an 08 Audi A6 Guattro 4.2 (thats an 8 cylender A6).  The MB is beautiful, but I can’t justify the $20,000 difference in cost over my Audi.  I have all tha same bells and whistles as his car and I like the ride of the Audi better.  It seems to handle the road tighter than the MB..and still give you a smooth ride.

The MB seems too soft to me.  I like the “sporty” feel of the Audi as opposed to the feel of riding around in my soft living room that I feel with the MB.

This is my 3rd Audi.  My last one was also a A6.  It was 10 years old with 100,010 mi.  I gave that to my son and he loves it.  It still looks and drives great.

As for repair costs, both are up there so….take that into consideration also.

An Inspired Reader

“so i just switched from nysc to equinox and HOLY MOLY what a difference.  It’s like going to a spa – but its a gym.  Makes going to the gym so much more fun and enjoyable.

i’ve often wondered how you stay so motivated (which is so inspirational by the way), going to a nice gym instead of a dump certainly helps! Totally worth the extra cash.”

As this reader mentions the Equinox facility is a great environment.  We talk about using a class or friend to motivate you when you aren’t inspired to go on your own.  The gym itself can work the same way.

  • It’s aesthetically pleasing, comfortable, and always clean.
  • You’re paying a buttload for it, so you should get your money’s worth.
  • Other members are fit and working hard.

I recently twittered about my grievances with Equinox, but at the end of the day, I love the place.  Like all relationships, there are tough times, so we talk and get through it! In fact today I’ll be at Equinox an hour early to sign up for Colin’s spin class.  Yes, he’s that good (on a physical and mental level) and totally worth it.

As I always say, working out offers you so much more than just physical benefits.

Tell us, what are things that inspire you to get active?

Opinions should be the basis for discussion, not criticism.

— Reader Edward on my comments section

I have no issue with people writing their disagreements with my perspectives. But vindictive comments contaminate the content of MTM, and generate useless negativity.

I’m not telling you what to do/buy/wear, I’m just sharing with you what I do.

If you have a problem with me personally, I welcome your emails and look forward to hearing your opinion.  Moreover, I think it is more meaningful (and tasteful) when voiced privately.

About once a week, a reader emails me asking for some help finding an affordable, colorful dress for an upcoming wedding.

I can’t stress how helpful ShopStyle.com can be to start your search.

Here’s all you have to do.  I’ll use the reader’s criteria as an example.

  1. www.Shopstyle.com
  2. Select dresses
  3. Select cocktail
  4. Set your price range ($50-250)
  5. Select your sizes (XS, S)
  6. Choose the colors that look good on you (yello, blue, pink)

Done in less than a minute!

Now I have a selection of a little over 400 styles from BCBG, Anne Klein, Revolveclothing.com, CoutureCandy.com, Bloomingdales, Shopbop.com, Saks, etc.

Click here to see the results of my search.

And then of course you know I love Ilus as an option to rent a fabulous dress for the occasion.  Linda should still be having her sale right now, so you could pick up a designer dress for a steal.

Mary—I love you.  I just called ilus about that dress Meghan wore to the Met…its mine!! Mom picking it up tomorrow. I’ve loved that dress since I saw her in it, and would have NEVER know it was going on sale if it weren’t for you!!! Your blog has helped me in so many ways (lost 10 lbs to boot)—rewarding myself with that dress =) thank you a million times over! cheers!

These are the kind of emails that make my day!

I’m so glad many of you have found my site useful in some way.

For those of you have been questioning why it is I post about brands, offer so many fitness tips and nutritious recipes, and insist on reviewing beauty products, here is your answer.

MTM is my way of sharing the things I enjoy so should you want to incorporate them into your life, you can.

We don’t have to see eye to eye on everything for you to pick up a tip on mascara or try out a new squash recipe, right?!
