Hours in the sun without an inch of sunburn!

July 7th, 2015 No Comments

After countless hours of the Mexican sun over the Fourth of July holiday, I’m happy to report there is not an inch of skin on my body that is burned!!

I coved myself neck to toe in Nivea.

Nivea Invisible Protection, SPF 50

Spray on oil I rubbed in. Survives beach runs and shower rinses.

Pretty amazing stuff.

(Please excuse alignment, WP apparently hates me right now.)

Neutrogena Clear Face SPF 55

Not one spot on my face is red thanks to Neutrogena.

And after the sun set, I rehydrated with Darphin on my face and neck so I could do it all over again :)

Get your Body Prepared for the Holiday So It Keeps Working As You Keep Drinking

June 29th, 2015 No Comments

Holidays seem to be relaxing for our heads, but not really for our bodies. Yes, we decrease the physical exercise, but at the same time we intentionally increase the caloric intake.  Laying out on the beach, we absolutely need a margarita in hand.  The hot weather insists on cold beer.  How could we not eat burgers at a pool party?  And yes, I’d like cheese on that.

So while we’re not holding on to a ton of guilt, we’re demanding our bodies work overtime to allow us to relax.

You might think I’m going to tell you NOT to do any of those things.  You would be wrong.  I’ll be right there with you pouring the tequila and making patties.

So our plan should be to get our metabolism in gear before the festivities begin.

Here is the plan of attack:

1.  HITT – High Intensity Interval Training.

Taking your heart rate to its max and then dropping it down again.  You can do this in so many way: spin class, boot camp, boxing, circuit training, running up a hill, etc.

It’s not easy, but it’s effective in spiking your metabolism.

2.  Keep Eating!

To prep for days in bathing suits, we usually starve ourself.  Bad idea.  If you stop eating now, your metabolism will slow down.  When it’s hit with the onslaught of goodies, it won’t be prepared.

Keep it moving at regular pace by eating 5 small meals a day.  Each including protein, carbs, and fat.

3.  Drink lots of water.

Sunshine and booze are satisfying and depleting at the same time.  Hydrate your body now!

The additional water will help control your portion control at meals as well.

4.  Plan ahead.

Plan one day when you will exercise.  Make it your favorite workout so you’ll want to do it.  You don’t have to make it a killer workout, just one to keep everything in motion.

I promise you now, you will feel AMAZING after you’re done.

Reflecting on your sunglasses style

May 19th, 2015 No Comments

If you’ve been with me for a while, you know I’m a proven sunglasses whore.  I would hate to tally my running total on designer frames.  After the past two years of shopping at Selima et Benjamin in the Brentwood Country Mart, I’m embarrassed to realize that most of that money I spent previously went towards flashy brands like Chanel, Gucci, or Tom Ford instead of well-made frames and lenses sold by brands like Salt, Benjamin, Dita, Tavat, Randolph Engineering, Thome Brown, to name a few.

The other thing I love about the boutique, owned and operated by local Cindi Montoya and her sunglasses-designer husband Benjamin, is that their collection is always on trend (if not ahead) AND secures designers’ exclusives.

So what better place to explore some of the summer’s best trends for us to adopt?!

Wham, GLAM, Thank you Thierry Lasry.

Theirry Lasry

Thierry Lasry is like the Tom Ford of the sunglasses world, a trend in himself. He creates “elite-looking” frames for women that make even a mommy trucking around soccer gear feel sexy.  Every woman on the westside owns at least one pair.   His oversized cat-eye is fabulous, and the acetate which comes in bright translucent hues, striking opaque colors, two-toned ombre, and multi-colored tortoise make them the statement piece of your outfit.  Thankfully as flashy as they are, you won’t see a brand in sight.  You’ll know them by their  signature metal temples, the latest of which is matte as seen on his biggest fan, Anne Hathaway below.

Prices start at $435.  Buy them at Selima, certain Intermix stores, and online at ShopBop or EyeGoodies

I bought my mamma a pair for her birthday!

A little pop of reflective color goes along way, ladies who love Lulu.

Wildfox is like the instant solution to updating your outfit.

In one pair, you can combine any of the popular trends you want:

Thick acetate
Reflective
Cateye
Wayfarer
Aviator
Bright colors

I love the Catfarer pair I bought above because it takes my very plain workout wear to being fun and funky.

Their whole collection is that way, so hit up Wildfox.com and shop around.  Prices start around $160.

Along with Beyonce and Alessandra Ambrosia, my sister is a huge fan.

Trendy, Tactful, and Timeless

Salt Summer 2015

Salt, started by 8 guys from Oliver Peoples, delivers a variety of trendy designs in a much more subtle way.  You’ll pay more for them and wear them for a lot longer than a pair of Wildfox.  All of their lenses are polarized.  I adore the Odin avaitors I’m wearing in the opening shot of this post.

Other trendy options you should try:

Round metal frames by brands like Ralph Lauren, Benjamin, and Wildfox. You can find some great vintage ones too.

Not many people will tell you to get heavier, but when it comes to Jacque Marie Marge, that’s his schtick right now.  The French designer turned LA local only distributes his frames to a few retailers, so if you find a pair, grab them.  Otherwise, many other popular designers are going heavier on the frame.

Celine New Pretty Sunglasses

I’m sure you’ve already seen the cross-bar on these Celine frames (which Cindi is usually sold out). Now you’ll notice that little connecter everywhere.  Historically on an aviator or a throwback style, the cross-bar has befriended the hipsters and subsequently the fashionistas.  Like the thicker acetate above, you’ll either love it or hate it.

You gotta make it match – A How-To on Bronzer

July 8th, 2014 No Comments

Blonde girl tanning

One of the frustrations we never really talk about during the summer is skin tone.  Staring into the mirror, we are blinded by convenience and cheapness.  In other words, we apply our pale, everyday makeup on our suntanned faced so we don’t have to buy new products.  We just HOPE it absorbs in and the tone evens out.   The other scenario is when we try to conceal a sunburn; unfortunately, our dehydrated skin sucks out all of the moisture from the lotion before we can even apply  powder.

Let me set us of all, straight: we’re not fooling anybody!

Eva Longoria bad makeup

Not to worry, you don’t have to buy all new cosmetics.  Lotions and bronzers will help pull you through with glowing features.

Lauren Conrad is a good example of the look we want: skin-kissed, all over, with exactly the same color.  Her face matches her neck which matches her body.  Here’s how you do it:

1.  HYDRATE YOUR SKIN

Dermalogica hydrating serum

Jouer Cosmetics Primer

Dry skin caused by too many outdoor activities not only expedites the aging process, but also creates a huge obstacle to getting your skin tone even.

For years I’ve been using dermalogica skin hydrating booster after a day in the sun.  It refreshes your skin almost instantly.  Jouer just came out with a moisturizing primer ($38) that does the same thing so your face doesn’t have to steal moisture from your foundation.

2.  PICK THE RIGHT BRONZER

Guerlain Terracotta 4 seasons bronzer

After an extensive search online, I can’t find anyone who claims they know THE BEST bronzer on the market.  Many people mentioned Chanel, which no longer seems to make their bronzer.  The other favorite was Guerlain Terracotta 4 Seasons Tailor Made Brozer ($76), but their Terracotta Bronzing Powder ($52), that comes in 7 colors, looks more approachable to me.  My suggestion to you would be to spend a day in a department store and figure out your favorite.

Jouer Cosmetics Bronzing powder

I use Jouer cometics matte bronzer with my powder brush over my “everyday” foundation powder.  I’m not that tan so a little color does the job for me.  If you need more color, consider using a matte bronzing lotion by itself or adding it to your foundation.

3.  APPLY ALONG THE BONES

The TRICK is to start at under the cheek bone, jaw bone, or hair line and then whisp out from there.  Applying the darker color this way, it will be heaviest in the areas of your face that are naturally shadowed.  Conturing bonus!

(Headline photo via Jouer Cosmetics Instagram.  Jouer generously sends me products.  I write about the ones I love.  Just like I do with everything else!)

Celebrities in one piece bathing suits

I wore a shirt today in my SoulCycle class that said, “I eat cake for breakfast.”  If I took that shirt off, by the looks of my tummy at the moment, you would believe that’s true!

Thankfully, me and my love handles can hide out his summer in a one-piece.  It only took 3 years of celebs strutting around in them to overturn the soccer-mom stigma and resurface as a suitable. Bad pun interned. (Quick side note: I applaud moms for dressing on the conservative side around children.)

Since one-pieces are now trendy, I figured it would be easy to find a few sexy styles.  Such is not the case!  My favorite retailers either only have a couple cutes ones to choose from, a big selection of “slimming” and full coverage styles, or the side cut-outs.

Can we talk about this for a second?  What is the point of a one piece suit without any sides?  If you’re going for exposure, why not wear a bikini and save yourself the ridiculous tan lines?

Enough of that.  Here are the one pieces I found online.  My suggestion would be to go shop the mall if you want a big selection.

SoulCycle tested sweat-proof makeup for summer

May 27th, 2014 1 Comment

20140527-120335-43415639.jpg

One of my SoulCycle secrets: I wear makeup to teach class.  Putting myself together from head to toe helps me pull my focus in and present my best self to the room.

Why do you care: The products I use are cheap and sweat-proof! I’m not saying you need to wear makeup to workout, I’m saying you might want these guns in your arsenal when the heat hits and you have to go mingle at a pool party

Above are my three staple cosmetics that withstand not one but two classes and sometimes a hot yoga class at the end.   That’s A LOT of sweat and I emerge looking decent with everything (with the exception of my hair) is still in place.  COLORSTAY and WATERPROOF are right on the money! I also pencil in my eyebrows and wear lipstick, but those are usually toast by the end.

As you all know I  wear Jouer Cosmetics and Chanel on a daily basis, but I’m not footing that kind of bill for stage makeup I’m wearing in the dark. Revlon and L’Oreal do the trick and I only break out if I don’t wash them off afterwards.

Ray Ban people, it’s time to switch it up this summer

I always think of Warby Parker as a hipster, Brooklyn brand.  You know, skinny guys in tight, cuffed jeans, with fitted button downs and cool shades.  I use their instagram in client pitches all the time because their gallery is so well curated to convey the lifestyle.  HOWEVER, the truth is, WB frames are approachable for everyone.  They modernize vintage styles making them versatile and easy to wear.  Then, they price them reasonably.

I would say if you’re a Ray Ban person looking to add a little flare to your face, WP is your answer.

Today they launched their Summer collection that includes 9 new frames and 4 new colors.  “You’ll find bookish silhouettes in surf-inspired hues and classic styles in beach shack shades.”

Price is simply $95.  Click here to shop.

Like TOMS shoes, for each pair sold, a pair goes to someone in need.

Heat chic

I’m exhausted…but in the best way.  The work for my client’s event, The Palm Springs Photo Festival is a pleasure and an honor.  I’m amongst some of the most talented photographers in the world and people who are striving to create work like theirs.  I’ll post pics this weekend.

As we are in Palm Springs, it’s HOT.  I mean like butt sweat hot….

A couple of weeks ago I posted about the trends from Coachella, which takes place in the Palm Springs desert.  Since I’m working, I can’t go all out hippie like that crowd, but a nice tank and presentable shorts/skirt are casual and conservative.  Accessories are simple but add just enough personality so I don’t feel like an LL Bean ad.
