Strength will get you a sexy back

June 8th, 2015 No Comments

When you’re wearing a bathing suit, the most exposed part of your body is your back, so we gotta get it looking good!  Plus, strength in your back body will improve your posture.

I’m a firm believer in “Repetition = Definition” but you can’t define muscles that you don’t have.

By using heavier weight in your workout, you’ll build the muscle first and then you can tone it.

In this video of an angled row, I’m using that philosophy to build back muscle.

In a normal seated row, you will usually feel tension in your neck and you pull.  By raising the angle of your arms, we take your neck out of the equation entirely!

Go for 3 sets of 10 reps.  In between, throw in some lunges to keep your heart rate up while your back and biceps are resting.

Convert that awesome YouTube video to an mp3 for your music library. It’s EASY and FREE!

Media Human

When I find a great remix or mashup I MUST have for my SoulCycle playlist, most of the time it’s not available to buy on iTunes.  Sometimes the DJ has it as a free download on his facebook page; sometimes the blog streaming it offers a link to download; sometimes I can just click download on SoundCloud.  But when none of those options are available, I hit up YouTube to find it.

Media Human, a free app you can download online, allows me to covert a YouTube video to an mp3 in two clicks.

  1. Copy video URL
  2. Paste it into Media Human.

Then the video will show up in your iTunes, or wherever you set it to go.  I created a folder in iTunes called “MediaHuman” I have them altogether.

As you can see in the screenshot above, MediaHuman offers a lot of other helpful tools for converting video should you need them.

A new total body circuit to change up your workout.

October 1st, 2012 No Comments

First of all, please excuse the full frontal naked face in this video….

Back to the purpose of this post: new exercises! Group fitness classes are great because you can learn new moves to incorporate into your own workouts.  Monique at BLAST900 tortured us with this Bosu circuit yesterday that has my glutes SORE today.  Yay!  I need all the help I can get with that flap jack :)

If you’re pressed for time, this is a great circuit to get a solid workout in about 10 minutes.  Just getting your heart rate up keeps your body and metabolism strong.

In the gym, I would combine this circuit with a back or tricep workout (click the links to see each broken down for you).  These muscles groups are tertiary in the circuit, meaning they aren’t are main or secondary target, so you should be able to hit them hard.  Here’s how I would combine the circuit and the back workout.

1.  One full circuit as you see in the video.

2.  Set of 30 assisted pull-ups (changing grips every 1o reps).

3.  One full circuit.

4.  Set of 20 rows – seated or standing with a twist.

5.  One full circuit.

6.  Set of 30 rear delt flies.

7. Lower Back Extensions

Update your daily makeup routine with these essentials.

You’ve seen Jouer Cosmetics on my blog for a while now.  It’s a product I was introduced to via PR and haven’t set it down since.  In this video you’ll see why I love the products so much: they’re practical, made of quality ingredients, and have useful packaging that saves so much room in my makeup bag.

A quick list of my favorites:

I will say there is one product I do not like from the line:  the mascara.  It makes my lashes look short and brittle.  According to Neil they’re revamping that product!

The new destination for luxury escapes starts with W – UPDATED

August 10th, 2012 6 Comments

You might remember I took some time off in February for a much needed vacation and to celebrate my 30th birthday. I posted this pic to let you know I was still alive :)

For two weeks, we ventured to the other side of the world – a whole 24 hours away – to Vietnam and Thailand.  On the trip we visited the central coast of Vietnam (more to come on that), Ho Chi Minh City (aka Saigon), the island of Koh Samui in Thailand, and Bangkok.  What an adventure!  Asian culture is quickly becoming one of my favorite to experience, although I’m not so sure it’s my favorite for R&R.  There’s just too much to do (and eat) instead of just relaxing by the pool. (Click here to see my advice on exploring Asia.)

That being said, being a world away makes it so much easier to disconnect from work and stress.  We chose Koh Samui, an island off the eastern coast of Thailand for it’s remote location and promise to not be like Phuket, which seems to be like the Cancun of Thailand.  On this island there are a variety of luxury hotels – Four Seasons, Aman, Conrad, Le Meridian, etc – but we chose to stay at the new W Retreat.

As I wrote in my piece for the Huffington Post, I’m not really a fan of the W cookie cutter formula. However, their resorts have been said to set the bar higher for luxury within the modern decor and still allow for a little fun.  I can tell you without a doubt, they absolutely deliver!  Check out the video of my room and pics from the trip below. You’ll only find the Retreats in exotic locations so be prepared to plan an escape, not a quick getaway.  And just get ready to relax!!!

PLEASE NOTE: Gary Leff’s website is BookYOURAward.com.  He is the reason I was able to make it to Asia flying business class using miles.

UPDATE

Gary, who has been quoted and referenced in every publication you can dream of, wrote a glowing article about the quality of the above video and the future of hotel reviews being video for USA Today.  I’m honored!

(Full Disclosure: I was provided a media rate for my stay at the W Koh Samui.)

Inside my closet

A tour of my closet.

You’ll see I’m not into drawers, more of a folder. Plus, I hate buying any furniture so that works out for me.  But, stacking cotton tees does not make for a clean closet. In real life, it doesn’t feel as messy as it looks…

This video intro to my daily vlogs is pretty up close and personal with my pores.  The lens on the Kodak Zi8 is wide so let’s hope I stay acne free!

Oh, yes, you heard me right.  Every day I’ll be posting a new video!

Cinderella Head To Toes

October 27th, 2009 No Comments

A video Head To Toe of my two nights out on the town in Houston.  I truly felt like Cinderella!

Many thanks to Gustavo Cadile and Erica Courtney, two brilliant designers who bestowed me with their flawless pieces for the events.  After being a fan of their work for years, I am now pleased to call them both friends.

Edward Sanchez put the icing on the cake with a magical makeover.  Houstonians can visit him at Urban Retreat if you have a special event or just want a lesson on how to apply cosmetics and lashes.

Unfortunately Gustavo and Erica’s pricepoints aren’t very accommodating, but if you’re on the market for something truly timeless then they would be my first stop.  (Visions of weddings dance through my head….)

CREATE MY LOOK FOR LESS AND WIN BIG

I understand I have a leg up in the princess department because of my fashion connections, but many of you are excellent at creating red carpet looks for less.  So, whoever sends in the most detailed replica of either ensemble for under $400 wins a $50 gift certificate to the store of your choice!

Submissions must be one jpg or pdf attached to an email list of all items (dress, chandelier earrings, 2 gold eternity bands, 2 gold/diamond bracelets), their individual prices, links to where you found them, and the total price.

Send to Mary@MoreThanMary.com by November 6th.  That should be plenty of time to search after the Halloween hangover.

(Full Disclosure: All three artists are friends and generously loaned their designs to me for the evenings.)
