My bikini diet isn’t so bad

May 21st, 2015 No Comments

I’ll be honest with you…I’ve been hiding under slouchy tanks and sweaters since I saw you last.  Thankfully my limbs are pretty lanky so no one can tell what has actually been going on underneath my clothes.  One guy I dated recently called my body soft and I almost started crying…not really, but I complained to my trainer for weeks about it.

In my heart I believe that the extra weight around my tummy has come on because:

  1. I don’t teach as much as I used to (I’m burning about 1000 less calories/wk)
  2. I eat out and drink more than should.  Hey, I’m still single over here.
  3. I’m getting older.  Technically, the body’s metabolism isn’t supposed to slow down until 35, but I’ve always been one to jump the gun.

Instead of FaceTuning all of my photos this summer, I’ve decided to take a little action and get the look and feeling I really want out of my body.

That being said, I hate to diet, so I’m just going to clean up my act.  From my experience, the smallest changes can be the hardest and always pay off the biggest.

Here’s my plan:

1. Eat cleaner.

None of this:

R+D Ding’s Crispy Chicken Sandwich

Some of this:

Seabass with Mushrooms at Baltaire

More of that:

Roast Deli Brentweod Tuna Salad and Veggies

And of course more cooking at home.  I also want to eat less bars.  As clean as they are these days, there is always more nutritional value and fiber to fill me up in real food.

 2. Exercise with a mission.

I’m strapping my heart rate monitor back on and committing to 600 calories per workout.  Three days in Zone 3, the fat burning zone, and 3 days (7 classes, 600 per class) in Zones 4 – 5. So total, I’m at about 6000 calories for the week.

3. More water during the day.

I don’t know why, but I absolutely hate drinking water.  Unfortunately, I think it’s finally affecting my digestion, if you know what I mean (TMI sorry!).  Arrowhead’s Black Cherry water has been a good way to ease into this new habit.  It’s really flavorful and filling.

4. No wine at night.

Come on, you know you’re with me when I say it’s sooo nice to unwind at the end of the day with a glass of wine. These days, I’ve been unwinding to the tune of 2-3 glasses a night! EEK.

Soooo, instead, I’m going to hit up Kreation daily and pick out ANY juice to drink at dinner.  Yes, they’re loaded with sugar, but they’re alcohol free :)

Last night I only drank half of one juice….and then ate half a cookie.  But I was happy, and I think that’s an important factor when you’re making changes.

Because this diet is not about abstinence, the rule is drinking only on the weekends.

5. In bed by 10:30pm.

More sleep makes your body more efficient and everything somehow becomes easier when your rested. Nothing is more powerful than natural energy.

And ta dahhhhhh!

Holiday weekend is the perfect time to start, right?! Who’s with me???

Long time no see readers :)

May 18th, 2015 No Comments

Hello to my very loyal MTM readers, thanks for sticking around!  After a 5 month hiatus while I started a new venture (read about that below), I’m looking forward to writing and sharing my experiences with you again.

Before I get going, I want to step back for a second….I’ve been blogging since 2006.  So much has happened in the space since then. To give you an idea, I’ve been taking selfies since before the word selfie existed.  The first iPhone hadn’t hit the market yet. (Can you even think back to your life without a smart phone?!)  Tumblr had just launched.  Facebook was so foreign to me I had my intern running my page.   Instagram wasn’t even in conception.  I was the first person to ever livestream New York Fashion Week…I could go on, but you get the idea…Now all of that is integrated into our everyday lives.

I’m looking forward to posting in this new blogosphere, but I’m gonna lay it out au natural.  Kinda the theme of my 30s living the casual life in Santa Monica.  You won’t be scrolling down pages of professional photography to glamorize my life (how I wish I had time for that).  As you have for 6 years on MTM, you’ll read about pieces of my life, products I love, places I go, genuine feelings I have…and see it all through the lens of my iPhone. That picture above is me right now writing to you!

My hope has always been that you’ll find my tips and tricks helpful.  Very simply just that.

If you have any questions, you can reach me at Mary@MoreThanMary.com.  For updates on new posts, I don’t do newsletters, so follow me on Instagram and Pinterst @MaryRambin.

Gotta run now, roasting up some brussels sprouts for dinner later. See you tomorrow!

Mary Rambin Summmer 2014

Literally.  Haha.

I took this picture on my vacation that JUST ended.  If you follow me on Instagram, you saw the pics from NYC and Montauk.  What a magical trip.

Usually, when you come home from vacation, you’re exhausted and discouraged to get back to the grind.  For me, thankfully, neither are true.  My body is totally refreshed, and I could not be more excited to work on my new venture!

So, in this case, I’m firing on all cylinders to get the plan done for the business and secure the funding.

I’ll be back on the blog after Labor Day.  As I always say when I leave, there is 6 years worth of fitness, fashion, recipes, travel guides, etc for you if you need some guidance.  And of course, you’re always welcome to send me questions directly at Mary@MoreThanMary.com.

Have a wonderful holiday!

Work out on vacation without exercising

August 4th, 2014 No Comments

Mary Rambin, Malibu, California 2014

Last week, I spent my day off on the beach in Malibu.  By Saturday my body is so exhausted I try to be as inactive as possible.  I imagine you feel the same way when you hit the beach for a week off…with the exception that you feel guilty for making excuses not exercising at all.  Maybe that’s me projecting how I feel on vacation, but it seems to be the consensus amongst my friends.

While walking down beautiful Paradise Cove, I thought about all of the beach workouts I have posted over the years, but as I said, Saturday is my day of rest.

Then I remembered the tip I give my NYC readers who hustle to work and claim they don’t have time (or energy) to workout.  I tell them, when you’re walking:

  1. Engage your core and don’t release it.
  2. Lift your knees higher than normal.
  3. As you step down, follow through with your step, and squeeze your glutes at the end.

One of my readers says she lost 10 pounds just by changing her walk.  Even if that is an exaggeration, half of that would be an accomplishment!

I started walking this way down the beach and my buns were burning by Point Dume!  With this in mind I came up with several other ways you can workout without changing your actual movements.  (I wish I had made a video, but I was alone on my stroll…)  Please note that all of these require you to tighten your abs.

  • Walking: High knees + glute squeeze
  • Walking: Stand up straight, engage your rear delts (behind your shoulders) and rhomboids (between your shoulders)
  • Laying out: Leg raises 6 inches off your towel.  Hold at the top for three breaths.
  • Building A Sand Castle:  Squat down low and dig with your hands, not a shovel.
  • Sitting in a chair:  Knee raises in and out.
  • Reading a magazine:  Holding magazine directly above you, extend behind you and then “pull” it down to your belly.
  • Fetching More Beer:  Go up and down the stairs to the house 3 times each time instead of 1.
  • Playing with the kids: Playing with the kids!

Bare leg season is upon us. Here’s a quick toning tip!

March 10th, 2014 No Comments

Mary Rambin legs on the beach 2014

If you’re like me and live in California, “bare leg” season is all year long.  But for those of you on the east coast, you’re finally getting a chance to dethaw.  Now get excited to bust out shorts, skirts, and bathing suits.

I’m going to let you in on a little secret.  Before I go out to somewhere…important (like an event or date), I like to tone up whatever area of my body is exposed.  If it’s my arms and back, I’ll do some quick pushups.  If it’s my legs, I hit this one-legged lunge.

Usually, I bust out a few rounds in my bedroom before I shower, but for demonstration purposes, I had Owen take some pics after our workout on the Santa Monica Stairs.

20140310-093601.jpg 20140310-120026.jpg20140310-093834.jpg

The key here is to find something you can rest your back foot on so your foot is above your knee.  The tricky part is to get your front foot out far enough so your knee is right over your ankle.

When you’re in position, simply lower down and push up through your heel.  Keep your core engaged so your torso stays upright and you’re not leaning forward. Do whatever you need to with your hands to stay balanced.

I do as many as I can on each leg and then switch.  Depending on how much time I have, I’ll do one or two sets.

Easy and effective!

Never lose your list: Wunderlist

February 12th, 2014 No Comments

Mary Rambin Wunderlist

Every time I make a list, I lose it.  With  Wunderlist that’s not humanly possible!  Very simply, it’s your to-do list that never gets lost.  You make as many lists as you want and they sync them across all of your devices.  Everything you could ever want to do with a list (share, print, alerts, etc), the app gives you the ability.

There are three different levels of usage which can be divided out by price:

  • Free: perfect for one person
  • $5/month Pro : if you need to share and communicate with a small group of people
  • $25+/month Business

They paid plans offer deeper organization, like sub-tasks for big projects, storing documents, and secure collaboration.

In my opinion, tt’s so much nicer to look at and easier to use than Google.  So don’t worry, you don’t have to be a techie to work it out.
